Champagne Cartel home workout of champions

I’m like lots of working mothers when it comes to exercise. I try to do it every day, I really do, but there will often be something that gets in the way: sick kids, travelling husband, kids who want attention, a husband that wants attention, The Bachelor…

And I know we were all super impressed by that woman who used to work out with her kids by running laps of her Hills Hoist, but that just isn’t for me. Working out at home just didn’t do it for me. It felt, I don’t know, a bit pointless.

Until, that is, I started to compete with myself.

There is something about doing a set of exercises and racing against your own best time that just ignites my competitive nature, and has me outside in the yard with the kids mocking me from the trampoline at least a couple of times a week. And I am seeing some serious improvements in my time too, which keeps me going back for more, again and again. There is a point, and that point is to kick my own arse!

Now, of course you can adapt this workout to suit yourself. Do the pushups on your knees at first, and then graduate to your toes (and then, hey, go one-armed and/or clap in the middle and send us a video please). Skip with a rope, or just skip like a five year old girl around your yard – both will work just as well. If you’re starting from zero, maybe just do one set and then work your way up to two sets and then the full workout. You can vary your squats, from regular squats to sumo squats or just doing the lower half of the squat. You can change the height of your step ups to vary the challenge and you can add weights to your walking lunges if they’re getting too easy.

The key is to keep them consistent at first, and then just make it a bit harder for yourself as you get stronger. You can do these regularly, or just once a month or so to measure how you’re going with your fitness.
