8 brands for sensitive or problem skin

8 products for treating sensitive skin

I get a lot of questions from the ladies that attend my makeup workshops about how to deal with their sensitive skin. The most common problems they have are things like breakouts (particularly hormonal URGH how annoying are they!), redness, capillaries and itchiness or reactions to products. Summer can be a bad time for some conditions, while others can actually improve in the warm weather and with some exposure to the sun.

Right so first up, I’m clearly not a skin doctor so I’m obligated to gently remind you to have any problem properly diagnosed. Red, patchy breakouts for example, can be caused by any number of conditions from eczema to dermatitis to food allergies, so it’s important to treat the underlying problem as much as it is to treat the symptoms. And anyone living in Australia should see a skin specialist annually (at least, depending on your family history) to get your skin checked for skin cancers.

I’ve listed below a few products I’ve come across lately that are recommended for different types of sensitive and/or problem skin issues. I’d be super keen to hear if you have used any of these products and either loved/hated them. And if you have any great tips or secret miracle products of your own, I’d encourage you to share please!

8 products for treating sensitive skin1.Avene Cicalfate Repair Cream

Eau Thermale Avène is a French, dermatologist-recommended skincare range. One of their bestselling products is Cicalfate Repair Cream “the all-in-one wonder cream can literally be used on the entire body and is a must have for any medicine cabinet and is perfectly sized for a range of uses for the whole family: cuts, burns, nappy rash, chafing, to more severe irritations like eczema, atopic dermatitis, and other skin irritations.” I was sent a sample of this to try which I gave to my husband. He has occasional outbreaks of red, flaky patches (undiagnosed, despite my best efforts. SIGH). He was really pleased with the results when he tried it and now he swears by this cream to soothe and help settle down the red.

2. MooGoo

The Australian based company MooGoo uses all natural ingredients – “Credible ingredients for skin. No gimmicks”. I have a very sensitive scalp which is prone to itchiness and I have been using their scalp care products milk shampoo and cream conditioner for years and I absolutely love them. When my noggin is super bad I use their scalp cream which it is beautiful and soothing. They have a massive website with loads of useful information about skin conditions as well.

3.Qsilica

We were sent the Qsilica Naturally CLEAR range product to try and Carolyn put up her hand to give it a go (and hasn’t been disappointed). Qsilica Naturally CLEAR range is formulated with silica, that when paired with natural herbs, essential vitamins and minerals, supports the cleansing, anti-inflammatory and healing actions needed for problem skin. The Qsilica Naturally CLEAR range includes a skin cleanser, a water soluble spot gel and a daily supplement to assist inflammation, skin repair and healing. We’ve been advised that it provides support to adults who have a tendency to break out in pimples either on the face or upper body.

8 products for treating sensitive skin4. Evohe

I was going through my study recently and found some samples of Evohe in a goody bag that I got from a party. I had just run out of my Alpha-H products and I thought why not give them a go. Evohe is an ethical, sustainable, cruelty-free Gold Coast-based skincare range. It’s their mission is to “formulate the highest quality, most nutritious and purest skin care and cosmetics so you can nourish your skin in the safest, healthiest way possible.” All their products are free from palm oil derivatives, palm derived glycerine, synthetic fragrances, colours or preservatives, parabens, animal derivatives, soap, retinol, sulphates, mineral oils, petrochemicals, propylene glycol, lanolin, triethanolamine or phthalates. I’ve been using the Omega 369 Serum and I gave my husband the Repair Intensive for body for Christmas. We both really like the products, I think knowing that all the ingredients are good for you is certainly an advantage.

5. Alpha H

I have been using Alpha-H skincare products for more than 10 years. I am often asked what skincare range I use and I will proudly share my secret. Alpha-H was created by the amazing Michelle Doherty, who now flies the flag of this Queensland company all over the globe.  Michelle suffered with chronic cystic acne in her teenage years and throughout her 20s, so began a quest to find a product range that would address not just the imbalances of the skin on a daily basis, but one which would help prevent those problems from reoccurring. I love this range of products because you really feel like they are doing something for your skin. I use their sensitive range, as I am prone to slight redness. In particular I love their Balancing Cleanser. They have a more intense range for aged or very damaged skins, but it contains Glycolic acid which is too full on for my skin.

6. The Goat Skincare

Apparently the clean-living, herbal types have known about the wonders of goats milk for years but it’s only more recently that it has become so widely used. The Goat Skincare company says “Goats milk has a Ph level very close to that of the human skin. Its naturally enriched with lactic acid which may assist in the break down of dead skin cells caused by sensitive skin conditions, its also high in natural vitamins, minerals and proteins, higher levels than those found in cows milk.” My husband has been using the general moisturising cream for a few years now and really likes it as it seems to provide a barrier to the environment (heat, sun, irritants) which can cause his face to become inflamed.

I need to preface this by saying I hate paw paw ointment, but it’s not its fault. Years ago I shared a house with a bunch of rad chicks, one of whom had the unfortunate habit of slathering her hands in paw paw ointment. I mean really layering it on. As if that wasn’t bad enough, she would proceed to open and shut all the doors in the house, leaving a trail of paw paw grease over everything. For some reason it really used to creep me out, gives me the shivers thinking about it today. However… Everyone tells me that the Lucas brand Paw Paw ointment, with it’s antibacterial and antimicrobial properties, is brilliant for all manner of skin ailments. I’m not going near it, but let me know what you think!

8. Youngblood

I’m declaring up front that I sell this product… but I sell it because I LOVE it. The Youngblood mineral cosmetics range was originally created as a basic makeup specifically for patients recovering from harsh medical procedures, such as laser or chemical peels and surgeries. The range expanded and now they have a full range for all ages and skin types, including problem skin. I personally love the products as they are super easy to use, have great pigment and gorgeous colours, beautiful quality and very, very gentle for even my most sensitive makeup clients. This post has are some of my favourite products and how to use them.

I know there are probably loads more brands on the market for sensitive skin, do you have any favourites? Have you tried any of these products?

  • I use Babor, they have a wonderful range of skin care and serums. The Babor eyelash tint is the only one I can handle. Every other lash tint has had to come off a couple of minutes after they apply it as my eyes are streaming.
