How to make your blow dry last a week

I love treating myself to a blowie. My hair is yeti-like in weight and woolly in texture so it’s not the easiest thing in the world to manage. I absolutely love my curls but they are crazy frizzy. I have learnt that leaving it to the experts when I am going somewhere special puts everyone in a happy place.

Recently I was asked to write about how I maintain my blow dry. I think the question may have come up when I said I go for weeks without washing my hair. EEEEEEKKKK. Weeks? Well only two, but with my dehydrated hair it’s actually healthier for it if I leave it as long as possible so the natural oils can attempt to reach the ends.

I’ve listed below the top tips I have found to keep your blow dry looking good well after it’s use-by date.

My Top Tips To Make Your Blow Dry Last

Weather protection

Water of any kind is the enemy of your blow dry. Carry a hair clip and umbrella at all times. If you feel the merest spit of rain, get under cover quickly and wrap your hair into a bun. A supermarket bag makes a truly special makeshift hair cover if you’re caught short.

For showering, ensure you wrap your hair up tightly, put a headband on to protect the roots and wack on a shower cap. Leave the shower cap on until all the steam has left the bathroom too.

Dry shampoo

I don’t need to use dry shampoo at all but my friends with hair that isn’t like the desert say that it works a treat. If you feel your hair is getting oily, use the dry shampoo. You can even throw your head upside down and blast your hair with your blowdryer afterwards to keep the body if it’s getting limp.

Treat the ends

I find at about day 4 or 5 my hair is feeling a bit rough on the ends, so I rub in a bit of Moroccan Oil. I think the ends can dry out a bit from the blowdry so giving them some love seems to help.

Sleep bun

Sleep with your hair piled up in a loose bun on the very top of your head. I pull mine up like I would if I was making a high pony and then very loosely wind it around and clip it in place. I’ve heard a silk scarf or pillowcase is awesome too.

Sports

When I have a nice blow dry I leave my exercise as long as possible but when it gets to the point that I have to go, I put my hair up in a high bun and wear my sweat absorbing visor around the hairline. Don’t wear a cap if you are running as it will make your head really sweaty and your hair wet. Try to keep your hair off your neck for as long as possible after exercising until you really cool down.

Well there you go! Hopefully those tips to make your blow dry last will be useful next time you’ve been somewhere spesh!

Let me know what you think. Do you have any tips for preserving your blow dry?

  • Great tips! I’m lucky if my blow dry lasts two days thanks to my very fine curly locks but I’ve never thought to use dry shampoo so I’ll give that a go. Thanks for the suggestion 🙂

    • Oh yeah, you know it!!!!! And those blowies just save so much drama when you’re going out somewhere. Helps to make everything feel finished. You always look immaculate Nikki Xxxx G

  • I hope that was a dry goods bag and neither produce or meat in your plastic bag. I’d pay money to see you legging it from car to office in the rain with that on head.

I have to wash every two to three days. I’m your limp, lank, greasy counterpart.

  • Gigi, only you could look that glamorous with a plastic shopping bag on your head! Totally agree with all of your tips. I wash my hair once a week at most and invest in a professional blowdry as often as I can. So worth it when you have hair as thick as ours. x
