How to self-massage & why you should be doing it all the time

There’s nothing like getting face down on a table and having someone strong rub their mitts all over you. Hopefully this is being done in a massage studio rather than on a moist bar table when you’re a few sheets to the wind on champagne.

But either way, what we know (and what research tells us) is that humans crave touch and that a good rub down can heal all manner of ills.

Carolyn was recently given the task of regular self massage as part of therapy to help get her out of her head and more into her body, and she said it’s been such an incredible exercise. It’s totally worked to help stop her self chatter and focus on feeling rather than thinking.

And the great thing about self-massage is that you cannot possibly do it wrong AND it’s free!

So if you’re feeling tired or a little sore or stressed, or just want to get out of your head and into your body, here are 5 great massages that will only take a few minutes and will have you swooning all over your sexy self.

In your face

Use your fingers  to draw small circles from the top of the hairline, around the face, up the cheekbones, around the eyes and above  your eyebrows, then back down the hairline and all around where your jaw connects. Then gently rub your ears and earlobes between your fingertips.

Hand relief

Have a bad case of texters hand? Relax your left arm, palm up, on top of your thigh. Push the heel of your right palm slowly along the forearm in the direction of your wrist. You want to have some pressure but not painful. Then cup the left hand and use the thumb of the right hand to rub around and around the palm and then squeeze your left hand fingers in between your right thumb and forefinger. Repeat a few times, and switch sides.

Love thy noggin

This is a great video on how to give yourself a rad scalp massage and apparently it promotes hair growth (yeah look we’re not sure about that but I did have an ayurvedic hot oil scalp massage in India that seriously transported me to another dimension).

Ball your back

Grab a tennis ball and either lie on it or put it between your back and the wall. Move your body side to side and up and down and side to side so that the ball gets into any areas of muscle tightness. Stay away from the spine to avoid injury.  You want to press the ball firmly but don’t go nuts – you should be feeling relief, not pain.

Get into that naughty neck

If you’re at a desk all day you probably have a dodgy neck. Here’s three ways to massage your own neck.

So give yourself  a touch up today, you deserve it! Oh not like that, you cheeky lady… well actually why not do that too 😉
